Clinical counselling grounded in the belief that we are always in process.

Understanding where we’re coming from

Have we ever really arrived? Or are we always in process? Much of our anxiety, striving, and stress stems from the belief that there is a place of happiness, belonging, and success that we’ll finally arrive at if we just keep pushing. And often, we expect our accomplishments and continuous forward motion will save us from the inevitable pain of life. It’s the whole, “when I have X I will be happy” or “when my body looks this way, I will be worthy of love” dance we do with our internal selves.

Having curiosity about the process

Rather than focusing on outcomes and the “doing” as we have been so deeply socialized to do, I support clients to become curious about the process of life and what parts of it they might currently be processing. A lot of the time this looks like exploring the ways they are using their bodies, exercise, work, productivity, and food to distract from and cope with what’s really happening below the surface.

Coregulating our way through it

My intention is to create space for us to collaboratively look at these pieces below the surface—big feelings, anxiety, challenging relationships, grief, trauma, low self-esteem (to name a few)—because when we start to work directly with what is causing our distress within the context of an attuned, non-judgemental relationship, we grow our capacity to be with the hard parts of life in a more flexible and supportive way. We gain the ability to be with what is really happening in our lives rather than numbing, distracting, controlling, or hoping for something different.

Connecting to our inner self

The unfortunate reality is that we are very rarely able to know or control the outcomes of our life experiences and events. The more fortunate and hopeful reality is that the resilience, wisdom, and strength we need to move through our life experiences—the joyful and the painful ones—is already within us. Sometimes we just need a little extra help finding those parts of us.
